Children of Time is a 2015 science fiction novel by author Adrian Tchaikovsky. The work was praised by the Financial Times for "tackling big themes—gods, messiahs, artificial intelligence, alienness—with brio." Children of Time was awarded the 30th Arthur C. Clarke Award in 2016 In this novel, an advanced alien race known as the "Jenkins" seed various planets with a nanovirus that accelerates the evolution of the local spider population. The Jenkins aim to uplift these spiders to sentience and create a new species capable of inheriting their knowledge. DNA as an Ariadne String As part of their experiment, the Jenkins encode the spiders' DNA with a complex genetic code that acts as a tracking mechanism. This genetic code allows the Jenkins to monitor the progress of the spiders' evolution and keep track of their development over time. The book explores the parallel evolution of the spiders and humanity, as well as the implications of such tracking and manipulation by an advanced alien civilization. Featuring: Adrian Tchaikovsky.
