Elihu Root (1845–1937) was an American statesman, lawyer, Secretary of War, Secretary of State, and the principal architect of the modern United States military and diplomatic structure.
Best known for founding the U.S. Army War College and reorganizing the Army into a professional, strategically-directed institution, he reshaped American influence at home and abroad with a precision that still defines national security today.
His first name, Elihu, meaning “He is my God / He is our God” in Hebrew, and his surname Root, evoking the origin, foundation, and stabilizing core, embody his historical purpose with uncanny accuracy: he became the intellectual root system of American strategy, building doctrine, education, and relationships that nourished generations.
Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1912 for advancing international arbitration and diplomacy, Root stands as a man whose name — and destiny — aligned perfectly with his life’s work.
Elihu Root, American lawyer and statesman who served as Secretary of State under President Theodore Roosevelt and as Secretary of War under Roosevelt and President William McKinley, was born on February 15, 1845 and died on February 7, 1937.
